At Home: Over the Inside Garden Wall

Photobucket

Mural for Julie Christie by Stan Peskett. "Starting below ground level, moving through a wide, bright panorama of cottages, up past artificial grass, candles and woodland on the landing to float into a sky of birds and clouds."

Zandra Rhodes, "dress designer fantastic and connoisseur of the Woolworth's plastic scene, sits on a curve of carpeted foam platforms in the front room of her townhouse flat and beneath her flowering tree: a high round trunk and nest of chicken wire sprouting all varieties of Woolworth's plastic bloom. On the far back wall of the little room, that has her cushion bed sunk down in the floor, is a landscape like a window curtained with her own print fabric. A sharply delineated painting by Duggie Fields where there was a real window looking onto brick wall. This is all much more exciting."

Photobucket

Patrick Procktor in his studio with its wall of flowers, "each one the signature of a friend. It all began when Mo McDermott painted one, the others followed spontaneously. The peony blossoming in the right hand corner is by Cecil Beaton, David Hockney signed with a tulip: other contributors to the visitors' wall are Derek Jarmon, Auerbach and Kitaj."

Photobucket

John and Sally Jesse "made a cherry tree, just like that, on their sitting-room wall and ceiling. It was to decorate a wedding reception: they painted the branches by hand and blocked in blossoms with potato prints. Time taken: four hours. Around and about are fine pieces of twenties and thirties decoration, the sort that John Jesse is famous for in his Kensington Church Street shop."

I'm intrigued to see the photograph of Patrick Procktor. I think it is by Tim Street-Porter, from Vogue magazine. The photograph on the bottom right is of his friend Ole Glaesner. You may be interested to see my book on Procktor, published last year. Here is a link to it on Amazon:

Best wishes from Ian Massey
